Anjana was an Apsara who was cursed to come to earth. Only after giving birth to her son did she break the curse. According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman's father was Kesari, king of Sumeru. Kesari was the son of Brihaspati. Anjana prayed to Shiva for twelve years hoping for her son. As a result, she got Hanuman. Hanuman is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
