Ugadi Celebrations
Ugadi preparations start a week in advance. People clean and renovate their homes. Purchases of new costumes and items necessary for the festival are carried out. People bathe before sunrise and decorate their front doors and windows with fresh mango leaves.

Kartikeya and Ganesha, sons of Shiva Parvati, were very fond of mangoes. Kartiki insisted that mango leaves be tied to the door of the house to welcome prosperity and a bountiful harvest.

People make colorful rangoli in front of their houses after they sprinkle water mixed with cow dung. The new year begins with the blessing of the gods by worshiping them. People worship gods as they please.

People from different parts of the Deccan Plateau of India celebrate Ugadi with great enthusiasm. A big party with relatives. The celebration begins with an early morning oil bath.
