Onam is a 10-day Keralite festival. The most important day is his 10th day, known as Tyrvonum. Being a major day, the terms Onam and Tirubonam are usually used interchangeably. Shravan Nakshatra is known as Tir Onam in Malayalam. Tir Onam Puja is performed during the Chingam month of the Malayalam calendar when Shravana/Tirvonam nakshatra is dominant.
About Tilbonam
Tilbonam consists of two terms, 'Tiru' and 'Onam'. "Till" means a holy person. It corresponds to the Sanskrit word "Shree". People believe that King Maha Bali visits his people from the underworld (Patala Loka) on this day each year. In addition, there are many other beliefs associated with this festival, such as the birth of Vishnu's Vamana Avatar. These four days are known as the First, Second, Third and Fourth Onam. The second Onam is the most important Tirubonam day.
