Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha, Kuja Dosha or Chevvai Dosham) is a placement in a birth chart where Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. In Vedic astrology this is read as an indicator of strong, fiery Mars energy around the houses of self, family, home and partnership. It is mostly checked during kundli matching before marriage.
It is a pointer to be understood in the context of the whole chart. It is not a curse, and it does not by itself decide whether a marriage will work.
This guide explains what Mangal Dosha means, how astrologers check it and why the full chart matters. The aim is to make the discussion clear before a family takes a marriage decision.

Quick answer: Mangal Dosha at a glance
| Other names | Manglik Dosha, Kuja Dosha, Bhauma Dosha, Chevvai Dosham (South India) |
| Planet involved | Mars (Mangal), the planet of energy, courage, drive and also anger and impatience |
| Houses counted | 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th (Some North Indian traditions). 2nd is added by many authorities, especially in South Indian practice |
| Counted from | Lagna (ascendant). Many astrologers also check from the Moon and from Venus |
| Where it matters most | Marriage matching and the understanding of temperament in partnership |
| Is it permanent? | It is a feature of the birth chart, but cancellation conditions exist and many charts carry it in a reduced form |
Why is Mars treated this way?
In Jyotish, Mars is the natural significator of energy, courage, land, siblings and action. It is also associated with heat, argument and impatience. The seventh house is the house of the spouse and of partnership. The 2nd (family), 4th (home and peace of mind), 8th (shared life and sudden change) and 12th (bedroom comforts and expenses) are the other houses tied to married life.
In traditional Jyotish, Mars has special aspects on the 4th, 7th and 8th houses counted from its position. Astrologers therefore examine both the house it occupies and the relationship-related houses it aspects. These are interpretive rules within astrology, not a test of a person’s behaviour.

Mars in each house: what astrologers traditionally read
| Mars in | Houses it influences | Traditional reading (to be judged with the full chart) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st house | Occupies the 1st, aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th | Strong, direct, quick-tempered personality. Partner may need to adjust to a very assertive nature |
| 2nd house | Occupies the 2nd, aspects the 5th, 8th and 9th | Sharp or blunt speech and strong views on family matters. Counted as a Manglik house in South Indian practice, not by every North Indian lineage |
| 4th house | Occupies the 4th, aspects the 7th, 10th and 11th | Restlessness at home, differences over domestic matters, tendency toward heated discussion |
| 7th house | Occupies the 7th, aspects the 10th, 1st and 2nd | Intensity in partnership. Needs patience and mutual respect in the relationship |
| 8th house | Occupies the 8th, aspects the 11th, 2nd and 3rd | Sudden changes, strong emotions around shared life and finances. Often examined with extra care in matching |
| 12th house | Occupies the 12th, aspects the 3rd, 6th and 7th | Intensity in private life and expenses. Needs balance in intimacy and spending habits |
Treat this table as a map of themes, not as predictions. The same Mars position can read very differently depending on its sign, its strength, which planets sit with it or aspect it, and the condition of the 7th house, the 7th lord and Venus.
How Mangal Dosha is checked in a kundli
- Prepare an accurate chart. You need the correct date, time and place of birth. A few minutes of error in birth time can change the ascendant and so the house Mars is in.
- Find Mars’s house from the Lagna. If Mars falls in the houses listed above, a Mangal Dosha is noted.
- Check from the Moon and from Venus. Many astrologers repeat the check counting from the Moon (Chandra Manglik) and from Venus.
- Look at the Navamsa (D9) chart. Mars in a dosha house in both the birth chart and the Navamsa is called a double Manglik in several traditions.
- Look for cancellation conditions. Mars in its own sign, in exaltation, or conjunct or aspected by supportive planets can reduce the dosha. See our cancellation rules guide.
- Read the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the current dasha. These matter more for actual marital outcomes than the Manglik label alone.
Online calculators can differ in the houses, reference points and cancellation rules they use. Check the method shown by the calculator. A personal reading explains the placements, supporting factors and matching process rather than stopping at a yes/no label.
How common is Mangal Dosha?
The broad definition counts six possible houses, while other traditions count five. That means the label is not an unusual finding. An exact prevalence percentage cannot be inferred without specifying the method and studying a defined sample of charts. More useful questions are whether cancellation conditions apply and what the rest of the chart shows.
Types of Manglik Dosha
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Lagna Manglik | Mars is in a dosha house counted from the ascendant |
| Chandra Manglik | Mars is in a dosha house counted from the Moon. Often read as relating to emotional and mental compatibility |
| Double Manglik | Mars is in a dosha house in both the birth chart and the Navamsa. Considered stronger in several traditions |
| Anshik (partial) Manglik | A milder or partial form, used differently by different astrologers |
| Purna (full) Manglik | A stronger, fuller form, used differently by different astrologers |
The terms “partial” and “full” are not used identically everywhere. Our low and high Mangal Dosha guide explains the different factors behind the labels.
What Mangal Dosha does not mean
- It does not mean a marriage will fail. Jyotish interprets Mars as energy and intensity. The full chart and practical compatibility matter in a marriage.
- A Manglik label is not evidence that a spouse will die or suffer harm. Marriage decisions should not be made under such fear. A full discussion of compatibility is more useful than a frightening label.
- It does not decide compatibility on its own. A proper match looks at Ashtakoot (Guna Milan), Navamsa, the 7th house of both charts and the dasha periods.
- Remedies need a clear purpose. Families may choose prayer or puja for Mangal Shanti according to their tradition. Our Mangal Dosha remedies guide explains the common options and what to confirm before booking.
Where astrologers disagree
It helps to know that traditions are not uniform. The 2nd house is included by some and left out by others. Some count from the Lagna only, others add the Moon and Venus. Some use the Navamsa. Cancellation lists differ between texts, and a few rules contradict each other. A good astrologer will tell you which method they are using and why.
If you get a flat “yes, you are Manglik, it is dangerous” from a calculator or from someone who has not looked at your full chart, treat that as a warning sign about the advice, not about your chart.
Practical steps if you or your partner is Manglik
- Get the chart checked by an astrologer from an accurate birth time, not only from a calculator.
- Ask about cancellation conditions and the strength of Mars in the chart.
- Match both charts fully, including the 7th house, Venus, Navamsa and Guna Milan.
- If you wish to follow remedies, ask about simple traditional options, the purpose of any ritual and its full fee before deciding.
- Focus equally on practical compatibility: communication, family expectations, finances and shared values.

Frequently asked questions
What is Mangal Dosha in simple words?
It is a Mars placement in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. Traditionally it is read as strong Mars energy affecting partnership and home life, and it is checked during marriage matching.
Which houses cause Manglik Dosha?
The 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses are counted in some North Indian traditions. Many authorities, especially in South Indian practice, also count the 2nd house.
Is Mangal Dosha bad for marriage?
Not necessarily. Traditional astrology links it to intensity and friction in partnership, but also lists many cancellation conditions and says the whole chart must be read. Many people with the placement have stable marriages.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
A Manglik and a non-Manglik can consider marriage after a thoughtful discussion of both charts and real-life compatibility. The label alone should not decide the match.
Does Mangal Dosha go away after a certain age?
Some practitioners say its effect softens after about 28 years, and others cite different ages. This is a folk and lineage-based view, not a rule in every text. The chart placement itself does not change.
How can I check if I am Manglik?
Find the house Mars occupies in your birth chart. If it is one of the dosha houses, you are Manglik by the basic rule. Then check from the Moon and Venus, check the Navamsa, and look for cancellations. An astrologer can do this from your exact birth details.
